Guidelines for an Effective Conversation With
a Derailing Employee:

  • Set an informal, casual tone
  • Maintain a professional demeanor
  • Make it all about them
  • Let them know you have always viewed them as a high potential and why
  • Share your concern that you have sensed a change recently
  • Keep questions open-ended
  • Listen attentively
  • Validate where the employee is in that moment
  • Inquire if the work they are doing is interesting and challenging
  • Determine if any roadblocks are preventing the employee from re-engaging
